The four cardinal directions in ZZT-OOP are north, south, east, and west, which correspond to one step towards the top, bottom, right, and left sides of the board respectively.

The abbreviated forms n, s, e, and w are more commonly used for the sake of brevity.

The directions can be used with the / ? movement operators, direction modifiers, the blocked flag, #go, #put, #shoot, #throwstar, #try, and #walk.
